About the Project
Why?
I've always loved photography. I'm forever taking photos, and my camera is with me constantly. I considered creating a photoblog for a long time before this project began, only I was searching for inspiration and purpose. Inspiration finally appeared in the form of a similar project, Ten Years of My Life.
The concept behind the project is to post one photo a day for an extended period of time, with each photo being taken on that day. By challenging myself to take a photo every day, I hope to become more observant of the world around me. I hope the project will motivate me to learn more about photography, and that my photos will continue to improve with time. I also expect it will provide an interesting visual record of my memories over time.
Altered Goals
During the first year of the project I adhered to the goal of taking one photo every day quite well, with only a handful of days being skipped. However, this far too often resulted in uninteresting photos being taken, often in the lead up to midnight, and purely for the sake of taking a photo that day. This practice was not challenging me as a photographer and the results were uninspiring, thereby defeating the purpose of the project.
As a result, after a period of hibernation the project has recommenced with the more flexible intention of posting if and when inspiration allows. I will continue to post photos taken on the day, and I will aim to post as frequently as possible, however photos will no longer be taken purely for the sake of taking a photo each day. Each will have a more meaningful purpose, be that recording a memory or challenging my photographic abilities.
I hope that these altered goals will result in a more enjoyable and inspirational project!
Technical
All photos are uploaded to Flickr, where they are stored and retrieved from for use in this photoblog. The site makes use of Movable Type, which I have set up to be as future proof as possible. Credit is owed to the creator of Ten Years of My Life, and those who assisted him, as much of the inspiration and code for the layout was borrowed from an earlier version of his site.
Equipment
Most of my recent photos are taken on one of two cameras. The first is my super handy Canon Ixus 60 - a 6.0 megapixel compact digital that goes everywhere with me. The second is my much loved Canon EOS 400D - a gorgeous 10.1 megapixel digital SLR for which I have two lenses: an 18-55mm zoom, and a 75-300mm telephoto zoom.
Previously, I have owned and used a Canon Ixus 430 - a 4.0 megapixel compact digital. At times I may borrow my parents' Canon PowerShot G3 or use another borrowed camera, and occasionally I take photos on my phone (currently an i-mate Jasjam, and previously a Nokia 7370 and a Sony Ericsson K700i).
Post-production
I use Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for any image manipulation, although I generally keep this to a minimum. For sorting, filing and viewing images, I don't use anything more interesting than Windows Explorer and Windows Picture Viewer.
Reuse & Distribution
This site is licensed under this Creative Commons license. Basically, photos can be reused for non-commercial purposes provided I'm given credit, and if the resulting work is distributed it's covered by the same licence as this one.
